GINO’S STAKES: Pens fans sneer their way to closure, as Flyers get last laugh

No Comments Flyers, NHL

The latest chapter in the Flyers/Pens saga went to the win column of the Philadelphia Flyers.

But last night was for the Pens fans.

A night for anguish, healing, and getting even.

Pittsburgh was nothing short of Nazi Germany yesterday as talk of the enemy turned Crosby funeral mourners into dictators of the boo. Last night, the Consol Energy Center was the platform for those boos, those tears, and that scorn.

There were plenty of shoulders willing to hold the heavy heads of the crestfallen.

The Console Energy Center.

The Flyers cruised to a 4-2 victory as public enemies 1 and 2, Jaromir Jagr and Max Talbot, scored goals in their new digs.

Giroux Out Indefinitely

No Comments Flyers

The NHL’s leader in points, after being kneed in the head by Wayne Simmonds the other night, has fallen to the injury that the league can’t escape from. Claude Giroux has a concussion, and he is out indefinitely, according to General Manager Paul Holmgren.

The Flyers have seen plenty of concussions in their history. Most notably, Eric Lindros was a chronic sufferer. Currently, Chris Pronger is currently out with the “indefinitely” tag due to concussion-like symptoms and knee surgery. Brayden Schenn is also out with a mild concussion after being in and out of the lineup beforehand.

It’s assumed that both Giroux and Pronger will not suit up for the Winter Classic. However, the Flyers aren’t doomed.

Not yet.

Hands Off Ryan Miller

1 Comment Flyers, NHL

The Philadelphia Flyers are slated to play their playoff matchup from round one of last year, the Buffalo Sabres, tonight. In that series, Sabres netminder Ryan Miller went as far as to call the Flyers “mass-murderers” for their overly physical play in the series, including a crushing hit by Mike Richards on Tim Connolly.

Miller has done his fair share of whining over the course of his career—more recently than not. Miller has dealt with not only that, but with being barreled over by Milan Lucic, and most recently, slammed to the ice by Jordin Tootoo on the night of his return from a concussion from Lucic’s hit. Talk about horrible fortune. The first collision caused no suspension. The second one did. Curious.

How does this relate to the Flyers game tonight? They had best be careful in front of him, should he be the starter.

News Flash: Briere is Awake

1 Comment Flyers

Flyers forward Danny Briere does not have the benefit of size on his side. Listed at 5’10″ and 179 pounds, Briere is easily pushed around in the corners and on the faceoff dot by larger centermen and defensemen. Plenty of skeptics believed Briere had yet to wake up this season. I beg to differ.

Sure, the 34-year-old diminutive centerman won’t score every game, but when he explodes, he explodes at the best times. I’ve defended Danny Briere since his arrival in Philadelphia. Last night serves as a reminder of what Briere brings to the table for the Orange and Black. Danny Briere woke up a long, long time ago.

Matt Read becoming a “veteran” presence

3 Comments Flyers

Matt Read, 25, of Ilderton, Ontario, may be a rookie in the NHL from a college not many have heard of: Bemidji State. He also didn’t set the world on fire while being a part of the College Hockey Association (CHA)— his highest total, a career high 41 points in 37 games (19G, 22A) in his junior season.

He went undrafted and under the radar of every NHL team. Too bad they missed out on a pretty solid NHL skill set.
